AA Beyond Belief is website and podcast, but it’s much more than that. AA Beyond Belief is a refuge, a home in AA for agnostics, atheists, freethinkers, and all others who seek a secular path of recovery within Alcoholics Anonymous. The stories presented here reflect the broad and varied experience of those who choose to walk the secular path in AA.

At AA Beyond Belief, you can participate in a global community of secular members of the AA fellowship. Here, you will find recovery stories in the form of blog posts, audio recordings, poetry, and video. You will also find well-written and researched articles on AA history, interesting essays about the Steps and Traditions, book reviews, and fascinating articles covering the latest in the science and treatment of addiction.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to assure suffering alcoholics that they can find sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous without having to accept anyone else’s beliefs or deny their own. Secular AA does not endorse or oppose any form of religion or belief system and operates in accordance with the Third Tradition of the Alcoholics Anonymous Program: “the only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking”

Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.
The AA Grapevine is the international journal of Alcoholics Anonymous. … Often referred to as our “meeting in print,” the AA Grapevine communicates the experience, strength, and hope of its contributors and reflects a broad geographic spectrum of current AA experience with recovery, unity, and service
Purpose

The purpose of a secular meeting is to maintain a tradition of free expression.  Here, those in recovery from alcoholism and/or addiction may feel free to express any doubts or disbeliefs they may have and to share their own personal form of spiritual experience, their search for it, or their rejection of it.  Our only wish is to assure suffering alcoholics and addicts that they can find recovery without having to accept anyone else’s beliefs or having to deny their own.

The intent of a secular meeting is not to deny anyone their belief. All are welcome. A significant difference is there are no recitations of “prayers” of any sort. The only readings may consist of a Preamble, the meeting format, and a closing statement. Some meetings may not have any readings and go straight into discussion.  As it should be, group conscience is the guide for these decisions.
